The blockade -what did the union hope to accomplish in the civil war?

The Union knew that the South had European countries that needed it's cotton and would willingly supply the South with arms for their fight against the North, so the North used a naval blockade to prevented any outside aid to the rebels and this helped to strangle the Confederate cause and it's survival as a hostile entity to the Union of the United States of America.
